Prior to 1839, it was extremely difficult to preserve the memories of loved ones, especially those who had passed away. In an age where the death rate was appalingly high, this issue was made all the more urgent. Having portraits comissioned was very expensive. Howerver, the invention of the daguerrotype, and early form of photography, meant that people could finally afford to have a keepsake of those closest to them after they had passed on. This practice of photographing the deceased is more commonly known as 'post-mortem photography'. The invention of the 'carte de visite' which allowed for multiple prints to be made, meant that copies could be sent to other relatives so they too could have a small keepsake. The photos were usually of babies and small children, and mostly photographed as if in a deep sleep. Some however were posed, held up with metal frames to give the illusion of life. The practice was even extended to family pets. Nowadays, since the invention of snapshot photography and the increase in life expectancy means that post mortem photography has become much less common. However it is still performed occasionally to this day. Below are some images of Victorian era post mortem photography, and whilst these images may present a chilling display, keep in mind that these prints are not meant to frighten, but rather to keep the memory of those deceased loved ones alive, in an age where time truly was of the essence.
